This production posed tremendous technical needs and tight decision-making between myself and Rob Siler, the video and lighting designer. The Interference's story revolves around the obfuscation of information and the main character’s lack of control over her narrative. The design of this show needed stylized, jarring movements to fly between TV studios and reality, confrontations with administrative panels, and abstract spaces of social media, all while accentuating the difference between what the characters know and what the audience is confronted with. My design involved choreographed handoffs of headset, handheld, and planted microphones throughout the cast as well as intricate playback synchronized to video and a three-dimensional speaker system surrounding the space. Onstage voices, cacophonous app notifications, and judgmental inflections were all heavily processed and thrown about the audience’s periphery, refusing to let them pinpoint the true source.
