In part of UCF’s 2024 annual Celebrates the Arts festival, I had the pleasure of designing TheatreUCF’s production of Sweeney Todd in the Walt Disney Theatre within the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. This script presents a thrilling opportunity to combine a dense operatic music arrangement and libretto and bring it to the auditory scale of a large musical. GW and I spent a great deal of time thinking about perceived “weight” of objects in the mix, and sought to create as three-dimensional of an experience as we could. Working together with Richard Crawley, our music director, the goal was to create a transparent mix that made the PA disappear. Hearing a brick wall of sound coming from the ensemble as they took their places as a Greek Chorus will always be my favorite moment of this production.
